“Music and Math – More Than Counting Beats”

Suitable for ECE, Early primary.

This workshop explores music and mathematics links suitable for early childhood contexts. Key themes include counting, number songs, sorting objects and sounds, comparing and contrasting, identifying shapes and developing mathematics language in both English and Te Reo Māori.

Robyn Trinick began her career in education as a generalist primary teacher. She has since lectured in early childhood and primary music education for over thirty years. More recently she has delivered courses in primary literacy and the arts which has strengthened her interest in connections between music and language. Robyn has maintained strong links with schools and centres.

In 2018, Robyn was appointed as Kaiārahi Music (primary and early childhood) through MENZA (Music Education New Zealand-Aotearoa) and was involved in the delivery of professional development programmes for early childhood educators through ONZA (Orff-Schulwerk New Zealand-Aotearoa). Robyn has strong affiliations with Te-whānau-a-Apanui through whānau connections. She regularly interacts with educators residing on the East Cape of the North Island, and has an inside view of the challenges and successes associated with teaching in small rural communities.

Since the birth of her grandson with PURA four years ago, she has developed a keen interest in music therapy and recently presented a paper at a Music Therapy conference entitled “Me and my moko: Our musical journey”.
